From Progress to Purpose

Twelve months ago I embarked on a journey to set myself free from the chains of active addiction and all the problems that ride along with it. After spending time in rehab (not for the first time) I was left with the task of trying to reimagine a life for myself. By true fortune and chance I found ICM and quickly got involved by way of the core group as a volunteer.

That was 9 months ago and my time since then has been filled with all sorts of goings on from trips around the country for workshops to sitting with commissioners deliberating over where thousands in public money should be spent. Throughout it all I have been supported and encouraged by the program team at ICM and fellow volunteers alike. All of whom its been a joy to get to know along the way. Its been a journey and like all good tales it has had its twists. The latest being this…….

After much hard work, patience and dedication I was interviewed for a paid position within the ICM program team. Much to my understandable relief and quite disbelief I was successful! To have gone from begging on the streets of Manchester to the paid ranks of ICM feels like something out of a fairy-tale.

So far so good with my new position. Everyone has been very welcoming, the expert guidance of the wonderful Sadie is sure to stand me in good stead in the future and the continued support from all the staff has served to already make me feel like one of the team! 😀

The opportunities open to the people who start where I did as a volunteer are very real and I would encourage anyone to get involved. You never know where it will lead. The journey of a lifetime starts with a single step. Why don’t you take yours today?
